Eyre Highway Realignment and New Eastbound Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Kimba Project

Fact Sheet

Background

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is undertaking upgrade works on the Eyre Highway between Port Augusta and the Western Australian border. This initiative is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (80:20) as part of the Road of Strategic Importance Program.

As part of this program the Department is planning to realign the Eyre Highway and upgrade four road junctions at Kimba. This will allow for uninterrupted, continuous movements through the township, improving safety and efficiency for all roads users, including freight and local residents.

The project will also include the construction of a new heavy vehicle rest area which will increase freight productivity while also supporting compliance with the National Heavy Vehicle Fatigue Laws through the provision of regular, suitable rest areas.

Other works will include the construction of a new pedestrian refuge, removal of the existing level crossing, new and upgraded LED road lighting, road pavement construction, asphalt re-surfacing, and new drainage - to see concept design plan please visit our project website.

Current works

Investigation activities, including environmental and engineering surveys and geotechnical investigations, have been undertaken along this section of the Eyre Highway. Early works including service relocations and soil testing will be undertaken in the coming months.

Community engagement

In 2021 the Department undertook a Planning Study to gain local insights and to better understand how the Highway is used and accessed through Kimba.

This feedback combined with planning and investigations have informed the concept design plan.

Community and stakeholder engagement is important for the successful delivery of this project. As part of the ongoing planning, the Project Team will be in Kimba to meet with the community and answer any questions you may have.

Community drop-in sessions will be held at the Eyre Business Centre, 38 High Street, Kimba.

Please drop by anytime:
