Dean began his local government journey in 2003 and has held the privilege of serving as Mayor since 2014. With the same energy and passion as on day one, he has remained steadfast in his commitment to representing the community, advocating for regional voices to be heard in Adelaide and Canberra, and confronting inequities that threaten future prosperity and sustainability.

While the role is not without its challenges, Dean sees them as motivation to continue pursuing balance, fairness, and opportunity for the Kimba community. Serving as Mayor is regarded as both an honour and a responsibility—one made possible by the trust placed in him by local residents.

Under his leadership, Kimba has gained recognition and respect across Australia. No longer needing to explain “where Kimba is,” Mayor Johnson sees this visibility as a testament to the strength and achievements of the community, which are now being acknowledged well beyond district borders.

Kimba is also home for Dean and their family. Together with his wife Donna, they are proud to raise their family in what they describe as one of the safest, most supportive “villages” in the world.

As a Council, the focus has remained on progressive decision-making, taking courageous steps where required, and navigating the ever-increasing compliance and legislative demands facing local government—demands that continue to grow without a corresponding rise in resources or funding.

Dean’s leadership is underpinned by accountability and transparency. While governance may not always appear “glamorous,” Dean views it as the essential framework for sustainable growth, creating the projects, plans, and long-term vision that protect liveability and enhance quality of life for all who call Kimba home.

The work is ongoing, the challenges are real, and the rewards remain immeasurable. With vision and determination, Dean is committed to ensuring Kimba continues to serve as a leading example of what regional communities can achieve together.
